Winterkorn: Outstanding technical competence to develop brands further

Wolfsburg, November 29, 2010 – Wolfgang Dürheimer (52), Executive Vice President, Research and Development, Porsche AG, has been appointed Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Bentley Motors and President and Chief Executive Officer of Bugatti S.A. with effect from February 1, 2011. He is to succeed Dr. Franz-Josef Paefgen (64), who is retiring. Dürheimer will also take over from Dr. Paefgen as Head of Volkswagen Group Motorsport. The new Executive Vice President, Research and Development at Porsche AG will be Wolfgang Hatz (51), who has many years of experience with Porsche. Hatz will retain his current function as Head of Powertrain Development of the Volkswagen Group.

The Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft,Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn, emphasized: “Wolfgang Dürheimer represents the outstanding technical competence of Porsche. He will be contributing his knowledge and experience to the further development of the Bentley and Bugatti brands, which hold a leading position in the luxury segment.“ He added that Dürheimer…s successor at Porsche, Wolfgang Hatz, was an internationally recognized expert in vehicle and especially engine development. Prof. Winterkorn thanked Dr. Paefgen for his achievements: “Over the past 30 years, he has played a key role in corporate development at the helm of a number of Group brands.“ For example, Dr. Paefgen had enjoyed outstanding success in repositioning Bentley and had led Bugatti to a leading position in automobile technology.

Dr. Franz-Josef Paefgen started his career with the Volkswagen Group in 1980. From 1995, he was responsible for technical development as a Member of the Board of Management of Audi AG, before becoming Deputy Chairman and Speaker of the Board of Management in 1997. In 1998, he was appointed Chairman of the Board of Management of Audi and President and CEO of Lamborghini S.p.A. He has headed Bentley since 2002 and also Bugatti since March 2007. In future, Dr. Paefgen is to act as a consultant to the Board of Management of Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft.

Wolfgang Dürheimer held management positions with BMW from 1986 to 1999, for example as Head of Product Management in the Motorcycle Division and Product Line Manager. Subsequently, Dürheimer, an engineering graduate, was a Member of the Board of Management responsible for research, development and product management. In 1999, he joined Porsche, where he managed the 911 line. Since 2001, he has been Executive Vice President, Research and Development. New models and series that significantly strengthened the Porsche brand were created under his leadership.

Wolfgang Hatz was an engineer and then project manager responsible for enginedevelopment with BMW AG and BMW Motorsport from 1983 to 1989. In 1989, Hatz, anengineering graduate, joined Porsche, where he participated in the development of theFormula One engine. In 1993, he moved to Knorr Bremse, then joined Opel as Technical Director, Motorsport in 1995 before becoming Head of Powertrain Development at Fiat in 1997. In 2001, he joined the Volkswagen Group, where he was responsible for powertrain development at Audi until 2009. In 2007, he also became Head of Powertrain Development of the Volkswagen Group.
